If they want a book as a one-off piece of art, let them draw it with whatever means graphical artists have, and render it as bitmaps or PDF. For the remaining 99.9% of books that just need to convey some text content plus some illustrative graphics, and are intended to be mostly read, not peered upon, I severely urge the ebook and web site designers to stick to simplicity and usability, and consciously eschew ornament where it does not belong. - 9000
^ Очевидный комментарий, но не о том. Не 99,9%, а заметно меньше (всё ещё большинство, но доля меньше). Такая вёрстка, оформление и «кастомизация» — способ использования оформления для передачи/создания эмоций, и с простотой/удобством (сложностью и неудобством) связаны не так прямо. И в этом смысле сейчас в вебе много сильных и красивых вещей — раньше они были ручной работы, а сейчас вот перешли к мелкосерийному редпроцессу. Потому что «mostly read» совсем не подразумевает неизбежную «монотонную стену текста с редкими картиночками», как, кажется, следует из комментария 9000. - × × ×
Тексты на картинке трудно читать. В первую очередь из-за шрифта, конечно. Впрочем, как раз вопросы шрифтов на вебе сейчас решаются сильно лучше, чем 5 лет назад. Речь не о стене текста, а о тексте, структурированном для удобства. Удобство влечёт красоту (тут как с формой самолёта), не наоборот. Внесение мелкого орнамента как раз не кажется мне технически трудным, вот его *производство*, как всегда, трудновато, оттого и редко. Сочинение иллюстраций не легче сочинения текста. Ну и бумага — она как камень, а веб — как вода, веб-документ должен уметь заполнять самые разные форм-факторы, оттого вёрстка сложнее и дольше, несмотря на впечатляющую автоматизацию. Но опять — уникальное художественное противоположно массовому и потому противится автоматизации, т.е. воспроизводству известного, пусть параметризованному. - 9000

"The idea of asking authors to annotate their first editions as a way of raising money for PEN came originally from the literary agent Peter Straus, who is well known in the book world for his laconic but encyclopedic recall of Booker prize winners and other literary lists. He first suggested it in 2005, but it was only when Gekoski joined the board of PEN in 2010 that he took charge of the idea and made it work. Together with his wife, Belinda Kitchin, he set about making a list of authors and choosing which of their titles was most likely to make a good price at auction. He then wrote to each of them, suggesting which book he’d like them to use. In most cases he supplied the first edition, which he sourced through his contacts in the trade. When writers asked him what “annotate” really meant, he told them, “… like ‘Humpty Dumpty’, ‘It means whatever you want it to mean. Though I have my own sense of it, it would be impertinent for me to tell you how to respond to your own book.’ And I sometimes added, ‘Whatever it is, please do a lot of it!’” • #прокниги - #теория_поля - × × ×
