Ignore the news — I.M.H.O. — Medium - https://medium.com/i-m-h-o...
“Adults often have a disconnect between what they expect for children and what they expect for themselves. A great example is the Thai health campaign video against smoking, that used hidden video cameras to watch as a child asks an adult for a cigarette and the doublethink arguments the adult uses to say “no”. My reaction to the enjoyable drive → random horror story → attempt to continue enjoyable drive loop was similar. Why would I choose to block these stories from my kids, but not for myself?” - × × ×

Reading Literature Makes Us Smarter and Nicer | TIME.com - http://ideas.time.com/2013...
"Gregory Currie, a professor of philosophy at the University of Nottingham, recently argued in the New York Times that we ought not to claim that literature improves us as people, because there is no “compelling evidence that suggests that people are morally or socially better for reading Tolstoy” or other great books. Actually, there is such evidence." • #прокниги#схватил_за_мозг - × × ×
“individuals who often read fiction appear to be better able to understand other people, empathize with them and view the world from their perspective. This link persisted even after the researchers factored in the possibility that more empathetic individuals might choose to read more novels. A 2010 study by Mar found a similar result in young children: the more stories they had read to them, the keener their “theory of mind,” or mental model of other people’s intentions.” - × × ×

I Wasn’t Prepared to Work « Symbo1ics Ideas - http://symbo1ics.com/blog...
"Working at any of the companies I’ve been at has never really been an intellectual pursuit, even though such a pursuit was the main driving force in my betterment up until I found work. It has been an exercise in solving a problem using given tools (and often, no more), and doing it quickly. What does that mean? It means I can’t spend 12 hours doing the equivalent of bumbling around finding interesting or ingenious solutions to things, it means I lookup on Google and StackOverflow what the correct way to read in a file line-by-line, copy-paste the code, and modify it. I could definitely write my own, but why bother swapping in that memory when the L2 cache—that is the internet—has it already? Unfortunately, this toxic habit leaked, and I find doing the same thing for other problems I have, including math problems. I have developed the hazardous mindset common in programming, “if it has already been done, why should I do it?” It is a dangerous inverse of Not Invented Here, or NIH syndrome." - × × ×

“Coub is doing the same and it’s starting to pick up some real traction. Over the last few months, the site, which lets people take YouTube or Vimeo videos, clip them to 10 seconds and loop them with music, has started attracting upwards of 1 million visitors a day from virtually nothing at the beginning of the year. Graphene Imaging Sensor Takes Clearer Pictures, Even in the Dark | TechNewsDaily.com - http://www.technewsdaily.com/18220-g...
“No flash? No problem. A new imaging sensor could soon make it possible for photographers to take clear, sharp photos, even in dim lighting. ¶ Created by a team of researchers at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, the new sensor is highly sensitive to both visible and infrared light, which means it could be used in everything from the family Nikon to surveillance and satellite cameras. ¶ The sensor, which is 1,000 times more sensitive to light than the imaging sensors of most of today's cameras, gets this high photoresponse from its innovative structure. ¶ It's made of graphene, a super strong carbon compound with a honeycomb structure that is as flexible as rubber, more conductive than silicon and which resists heat better than a diamond.” • #технологические_прорывы - × × ×

“The latest edition of the annual Internet Trends report finds continued robust online growth. There are now 2.4 billion Internet users around the world, and the total continues to grow apace. Mobile usage is expanding rapidly, while the mobile advertising opportunity remains largely untapped. The report reviews the shifting online landscape, which has become more social and content rich, with expanded use of photos, video and audio. Looking ahead, the report finds early signs of growth for wearable computing devices, like glasses, connected wrist bands and watches - and the emergence of connected cars, drones and other new platforms.” - × × ×

В Хроме добавили встроенную поддержку платежей через Google Wallet — Google adds in-app payments to the latest Chrome build as it prepares to bundle Google Wallet in its browser - The Next Web - http://thenextweb.com/google...
"Given how much time the average user spends inside the browser, adding a payment service to the software is a natural extension. It’s not difficult to understand why Google’s browser should include Google’s payment service. It also plays very nicely into Google’s strategy of blurring the line between the browser and the operating system. If the company can get Chrome users used to full-blown apps in the browser, it can arguably more easily transition at least some of them to Chrome OS in the future." • #волшебные_браузеры - × × ×

How Chris Hadfield became the most famous astronaut on earth - Quartz - http://qz.com/83986...
"As you read this, a moustachioed Canadian astronaut named Commander Chris Hadfield is readying himself for a ride from the international space station down to earth, with 800,000 Twitter followers in tow. When he left the planet on Dec. 19, that number stood at roughly 20,000. Neither Hadfield nor the 20-person strong communications team at the Canadian Space Agency set out to grow his count of Twitter followers, let alone try to make him of the the most widely recognized astronauts since Neil Armstrong. In fact, the CSA had a much humbler mission: to tell their countrymen that there is such a thing as the Canadian Space Agency and to interest young Canadian students in science and technology." - × × ×

Teenagers hate Facebook: A Pew study says that 94 percent of teens use Facebook, and hate it. - http://www.slate.com/blogs...
"A new report released this week from the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that Facebook remains the leading social network among American teenagers. It’s also the most reviled. While some teenagers interviewed by Pew claimed they “enjoyed using it,” the majority complained of “an increasing adult presence, high-pressure or otherwise negative social interactions (‘drama’), or feeling overwhelmed by others who share too much.”" - × × ×
“But despite reports of a mass exodus, most people aren't leaving. In fact, teen Facebook usage climbed one percentage point between 2011 and 2012. Facebook is the living dead: the most popular, least relevant social network where teenagers and adults alike gather out of fear of missing out on things that don't even make them happy.” - × × ×

What Really Happens On A Teen Girl's iPhone - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013...
“Casey’s habits underscore a new reality for this networked generation: Social networks -- and the gadgets they run on -- aren’t a distraction from real life, but a crucial extension of it. Born in 1999, just a few years after the mass adoption of the World Wide Web, Casey belongs to the first true generation of digital natives, who have no memory of life before the Internet. The eighth-grader, who lives in the northern New Jersey town of Millburn, has always been attached to her gadgets. When she was only 18 months old, she received a toy computer that quickly became her favorite plaything. In second grade, she got her first cellphone (“it could hold two numbers, it was stupid,” she says). Now, at 14, she’s the proud owner of a white iPhone 4S, which she takes with her to school, carries as she wanders around her house, uses at the breakfast table, and keeps beside her pillow when she sleeps at night. “I bring it everywhere. I have to be holding it,” Casey says. “It’s like OCD -- I have to have it with me. And I check it a lot.” • #trendtaste - × × ×
A closer look at zoom. - Making FiftyThree. - http://making.fiftythree.com/a-close...
“People typically don’t begin drawing a face with the eyelashes. You rough out the major lines, then add form, and eventually work towards levels of increasing detail. When the eyelashes eventually need to be added, you focus on the places where you need to add detail, targeting them one by one. Global zoom didn’t feel like something you’d pull in as needed to make targeted detail additions. We thought there was a better way to have the tool flow with the creative process.” - × × ×
Inside Google's Secret Lab | “Sergey is Bruce Wayne, and I’m Lucius Fox.” — Astro Teller | Businessweek - http://www.businessweek.com/article...
“Last February, Astro Teller, the director of Google’s (GOOG) secretive research lab, Google X, went to seek approval from Chief Executive Officer Larry Page for an unlikely acquisition. Teller was proposing that Google buy Makani Power, a startup that develops wind turbines mounted on unmanned, fixed-wing aircraft tethered to the ground like a kite. The startup, Teller told Page, was seeing promising results, and, he added proudly, its prototypes had survived all recent tests intact. Page approved Google X’s acquisition of Makani, which was being completed for an undisclosed amount at press time. He also had a demand. “He said we could have the budget and the people to go do this,” Teller says, “but that we had to make sure to crash at least five of the devices in the near future.” - × × ×
Live Blog: Apple and Corporate Taxes - NYTimes.com - http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013...

He says Apple uses earnings to finance Apple retail stores around the world, among other activities. “Unfortunately the tax code has not kept up with the digital age,” he says. “Mr. Cook says Apple has enjoyed unprecedented success over the last 10 years, and the worldwide popularity of its products has soared. We are proud to be an American company and equally proud of our contributions to the U.S. economy.” - × × ×

The seven craziest findings in the US investigation of Apple’s tax avoidance practices - Quartz - http://qz.com/86740...
"3. Apple Operations International, which provided 30% of Apple’s worldwide net profits from 2009 to 2011, doesn’t pay taxes anywhere. This move is devilishly brilliant: The US decides if it can tax you based on where you incorporate your company. Ireland decides if it can tax you based on the location of the people managing the company. So if you incorporate a subsidiary in Ireland, and manage it from the US, you don’t (so far) have to pay taxes in either country. And that’s exactly what Apple has done, not filing a tax return for AOI anywhere in the world in the last five years." • #конкультура - × × ×

The sad thing about Open Source software projects funded on Kickstarter is that they usually have an initial flurry of activity when they launch, and then they slowly but surely die off when the money runs out because they have no business model to keep going. Ну, поехали: “Store Files in your Flickr account: Files are encoded as hex strings and saved as a tEXt chunk inside the PNG, so the actual image could be anything. Flickr preserves the original data intact in the "Original" size. Unfortunately this method is very wasteful, resulting in file sizes 2-4x the original. PNG does support "zEXt" chunks which are compressed using zlib, but the libraries being used here don't. Even better (and more cool) would be to save data in the image itself as seen here. There is probably a restriction on chunk sizes that will cause this to break on larger files, I have only tested up to 15mb.” — https://github.com/ricardo... - × × ×
